Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Windows 10, 11, and Windows Server systems running the User Profile Service (ProfSvc)

Impact

A locally authenticated attacker can exploit a logical flaw to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges, leading to full system compromise

Mitigation

Apply the official Microsoft cumulative security updates immediately, or restrict multi-user and RDP access if patching is delayed

Affected Products & Version Scope

Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and other versions utilizing the User Profile Service

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

The primary remediation is to apply the official cumulative updates provided by Microsoft. Use the following PowerShell commands to force-install the required security updates.

powershell
# Install Windows Update module and apply the security updates
Install-Module PSWindowsUpdate -Force -SkipPublisherCheck
Get-WindowsUpdate -KBArticleID KB5005565, KB5005566, KB5005568 -Install -AcceptAll -AutoReboot

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If patching cannot be performed immediately, disable Remote Desktop Services (RDP) and restrict local interactive logins to minimize the attack surface.

powershell
# Disable Remote Desktop Services to prevent unauthorized local sessions
Stop-Service -Name 'TermService' -Force
Set-Service -Name 'TermService' -StartupType Disabled

# Disable non-essential local accounts
Disable-LocalUser -Name 'Guest'

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Run the following script to detect anomalous junction points or symbolic links within the user profile directory, which may indicate exploitation attempts.

powershell
# Scan C:\Users for unexpected Junctions or Symbolic Links
Get-ChildItem -Path 'C:\Users' -Recurse -Force -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
Where-Object { $_.LinkType -ne $null } |
Select-Object FullName, LinkType, Target |

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability exists in the Windows User Profile Service (ProfSvc) when loading and creating user profile directories. ProfSvc runs with elevated SYSTEM privileges. A logical flaw in how the service handles directory creation and ownership verification allows a local user to redirect profile creation processes to arbitrary system paths using symbolic links or NTFS junctions.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker with local access deletes or renames their own profile directory (e.g., 'C:\Users\<Username>') and replaces it with a symbolic link pointing to a restricted system directory, such as 'C:\Windows\System32'. Upon logging out and logging back in, the ProfSvc service attempts to write to or modify permissions of the target directory under SYSTEM context. This behavior allows the attacker to overwrite critical system files or plant malicious DLLs, resulting in arbitrary code execution with SYSTEM privileges.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

As this vulnerability is listed in the CISA KEV catalog, it has been actively exploited in the wild. In shared environments like Remote Desktop Session Hosts (RDSH) or Active Directory-joined workstations, an insider threat or an attacker with initial low-privilege access can leverage this flaw to escalate privileges to SYSTEM, compromising the entire domain infrastructure.
