Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

All SMDAgents connected to SAP Solution Manager (User Experience Monitoring) version 7.2

Impact

Unauthenticated attackers can compromise all connected SMDAgents and execute arbitrary remote commands with high privileges

Mitigation

Immediately apply the official SAP security patch (SAP Note 2890213) and restrict network access to the Solution Manager ports

Affected Products & Version Scope

SAP Solution Manager 7.2 (with User Experience Monitoring enabled and connected SMDAgents)

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Apply the official security patch by implementing SAP Note 2890213 through the SAP Support Portal. Ensure that SAP Solution Manager and its Java Support Packages are upgraded to the latest secure versions.

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

Before patching, restrict network-level access to the SAP Solution Manager ports (e.g., HTTP: 80xx, HTTPS: 5xx13) using firewalls or Access Control Lists (ACLs).

bash
# Restrict access to SAP Solution Manager ports using iptables (Example: Ports 8000 and 50013)
# Allow only trusted administrator IP (192.168.10.50) and drop other traffic
sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s 192.168.10.50 --dport 8000 -j ACCEPT
sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s 192.168.10.50 --dport 50013 -j ACCEPT
sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 8000 -j DROP
sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 50013 -j DROP

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Inspect the SAP Solution Manager HTTP access logs and SMDAgent logs for unauthorized requests targeting UXMon services.

bash
# Search for suspicious UXMon administrative service calls in HTTP access logs
grep -i 'EemAdminService' /usr/sap/*/J*/j2ee/cluster/server*/log/system/http_access.*.log

# Audit SMDAgent logs for unauthorized OS command execution attempts
grep -i -E '(exec|run|command)' /usr/sap/DAA/SMDAgent/log/smdagent.*.log

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability exists in the User Experience Monitoring (UXMon) component of SAP Solution Manager 7.2. Due to a Missing Authentication Check (CWE-306), certain internal services fail to perform any authentication validation for incoming requests. This architectural flaw allows remote attackers to invoke administrative APIs without providing valid credentials.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker can send crafted SOAP or HTTP requests to specific endpoints on the SAP Solution Manager. Because these endpoints do not enforce authentication, the attacker can directly access the management interface responsible for managing Diagnostic Agents (SMDAgents). This allows the attacker to dispatch and execute arbitrary operating system commands on any SMDAgent connected to the Solution Manager.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

SMDAgents typically run with elevated operating system privileges (such as sidadm, root, or SYSTEM) to monitor and manage target SAP systems. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability allows an attacker to gain full control over the entire SAP landscape (including ERP, CRM, and S/4HANA systems), leading to catastrophic business disruption, data exfiltration, and potential ransomware deployment.
