Oracle WebLogic Server IIOP Deserialization Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2020-2551) Analysis and Mitigation Guide
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTOracle WebLogic Server versions 10.3.6.0.0, 12.1.3.0.0, 12.2.1.3.0, and 12.2.1.4.0
Unauthenticated remote attackers can execute arbitrary code and fully compromise the WebLogic Server via malicious IIOP requests
Apply the official Oracle CPU patches immediately, or disable the IIOP protocol and restrict access to port 7001
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Apply the latest Patch Set Update (PSU) released in the Oracle Critical Patch Update (CPU) advisory using the OPatch utility.
# Set WebLogic environment and verify OPatch version
cd /u01/app/oracle/middleware/OPatch
./opatch version
# Apply the downloaded CPU patch (e.g., patch ID 32123456)
cd /u01/app/oracle/middleware/patches/32123456
/u01/app/oracle/middleware/OPatch/opatch apply2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If patching cannot be performed immediately, disable the IIOP protocol in the WebLogic Admin Console or configure a Connection Filter to block unauthorized IIOP traffic.
# Example Connection Filter configuration in config.xml under <security-configuration>
# Format: [Target IP] [Source IP] [Port] [Action] [Protocols]
# Allow only trusted admin IPs to access port 7001 and deny others
127.0.0.1 * 7001 allow
10.10.10.0/24 * 7001 allow
* * 7001 deny3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Inspect server logs for anomalous IIOP connection attempts and verify the currently running WebLogic version.
# Search for IIOP-related exceptions or unusual connections in domain logs
grep -ri 'iiop' /u01/app/oracle/middleware/user_projects/domains/*/servers/*/logs/
# Verify WebLogic version and applied patches

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability exists in the WLS Core Components of Oracle WebLogic Server due to unsafe deserialization of untrusted input. WebLogic Server supports the Internet Inter-ORB Protocol (IIOP) for distributed object communication. An unauthenticated attacker can send a specially crafted serialized object via the IIOP protocol, which triggers arbitrary code execution during the deserialization process on the target server.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker scans for exposed WebLogic Server default ports (typically 7001). Upon establishing an IIOP connection, the attacker transmits a payload leveraging common gadget classes (such as JtaTransactionManager) present in the classpath. This triggers an outbound connection (RMI/LDAP) to an attacker-controlled server, leading to the retrieval and execution of a malicious Java class within the WebLogic JVM context.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
With a CVSS 3.0 score of 9.8 (Critical) and its inclusion in the CISA KEV catalog, this vulnerability is actively exploited in the wild. Successful exploitation allows complete takeover of the host operating system without authentication, enabling attackers to establish a foothold in the internal network, deploy ransomware, or exfiltrate sensitive database credentials.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Vulnerability in the Oracle WebLogic Server product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: WLS Core Components). Supported versions that are affected are 10.3.6.0.0, 12.1.3.0.0, 12.2.1.3.0 and 12.2.1.4.0. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via IIOP to compromise Oracle WebLogic Server. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in takeover of Oracle WebLogic Server. CVSS 3.0 Base Score 9.8 (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H).
