Windows Authenticode Digital Signature Bypass and Spoofing Vulnerability (CVE-2020-1464) Analysis & Mitigation Guide
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTAll major supported Windows operating systems, including Windows 7, 8.1, 10, and Windows Server 2008, 2012, 2016, 2019, 2020
Attackers can bypass security controls (such as EDRs, antivirus, and AppLocker) by appending malicious payloads to legitimately signed files, making them appear valid
Apply the official Microsoft cumulative security updates (KB) immediately and audit systems for anomalous signed files
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
To remediate this vulnerability, apply the official Microsoft cumulative updates. You can force-install the required security updates using the following PowerShell commands:
# Install the PSWindowsUpdate module and apply the relevant security updates
Install-Module PSWindowsUpdate -Force -SkipPublisherCheck
Get-WindowsUpdate -KBArticleID KB4565351, KB4565349, KB4566782 -Install -AcceptAll -AutoReboot2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, harden application control policies by transitioning from publisher-based rules to strict file-hash-based rules in AppLocker. Additionally, restrict execution policies for untrusted scripts:
# Restrict PowerShell execution policy to prevent unauthorized script execution
Set-ExecutionPolicy -ExecutionPolicy Restricted -Scope LocalMachine -Force3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Run the following PowerShell script to scan critical directories for executable files that exhibit anomalous or suspicious Authenticode signature states:
# Scan for files with anomalous signature validation states
Get-ChildItem -Path 'C:\Users\Public\' -Recurse -Include *.exe, *.dll, *.jar | ForEach-Object {
$sig = Get-AuthenticodeSignature $_.FullName
if ($sig.Status -ne 'Valid' -and $sig.Status -ne 'NotSigned') {
Write-Host 'Warning: Suspicious signature status detected on:' $_.FullName -ForegroundColor Red
Write-Host 'Status:' $sig.Status
}
}Block Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2020-1464) is a logical flaw in the way the Windows operating system validates Authenticode digital signatures for executable files. The Windows signature verification engine fails to properly validate the integrity of a file when additional, non-signature data (such as a malicious JAR or arbitrary payload) is appended to the end of a legitimately signed binary. Because the engine only verifies the integrity of the original signed boundary, it incorrectly reports the entire modified file as trusted and valid.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker begins by obtaining a legitimately signed executable file from a trusted vendor (e.g., Microsoft). The attacker then appends a malicious payload, such as a compiled Java archive (JAR), to the end of this signed file. While Windows Explorer and Authenticode APIs validate the file's signature as 'Valid' because the original signature block remains intact, execution environments like the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) will parse and execute the appended malicious payload from the end of the file. This technique, known as 'Glueball', allows attackers to execute arbitrary code under the guise of a trusted, signed process.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As a zero-day vulnerability actively exploited in the wild and listed in the CISA KEV catalog, the business impact is severe. Exploitation allows attackers to bypass application whitelisting policies such as AppLocker and Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC). This enables threat actors to establish persistence, evade EDR detection, and execute ransomware or exfiltrate sensitive data, leading to potential operational downtime and regulatory non-compliance.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
A spoofing vulnerability exists when Windows incorrectly validates file signatures. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could bypass security features and load improperly signed files. In an attack scenario, an attacker could bypass security features intended to prevent improperly signed files from being loaded. The update addresses the vulnerability by correcting how Windows validates file signatures.
