Microsoft Browser Memory Corruption Vulnerability (CVE-2020-0878) Technical Analysis and Mitigation Guide
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTInternet Explorer 11 and legacy Microsoft Edge (EdgeHTML-based)
Remote attackers can execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user, potentially gaining full administrative control of the system
Apply the latest Microsoft cumulative security updates or transition to modern Chromium-based browsers
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
The primary remediation is to apply the latest Windows Cumulative Updates. You can trigger the update process programmatically using PowerShell:
# Install and run Windows Update module to apply latest security patches
Install-Module PSWindowsUpdate -Force -SkipPublisherCheck
Get-WindowsUpdate -KBArticleID 'KB4565503' -Install -AcceptAll -AutoReboot2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If patching cannot be deployed immediately, disable Internet Explorer 11 using the registry to mitigate the attack surface:
# Disable Internet Explorer 11 standalone execution via Registry
$Path = 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main'
if (-not (Test-Path $Path)) {
New-Item -Path $Path -Force | Out-Null
}
New-ItemProperty -Path $Path -Name 'DisableIE11' -Value '1' -PropertyType 'String' -Force3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Verify the version of the MSHTML rendering engine to ensure the system is not running a vulnerable binary:
# Check the file version of mshtml.dll to verify patch status
$Path = 'C:\Windows\System32\mshtml.dll'
if (Test-Path $Path) {
$Version = (Get-Item $Path).VersionInfo.ProductVersion
Write-Output "Current MSHTML Engine Version: $Version"
} else {
Write-Error "MSHTML.dll was not found in the default system directory."
}Block Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way that Microsoft browsers access objects in memory. Due to improper memory management within the rendering engine, the browser fails to validate object lifecycles correctly, leading to memory corruption. This flaw allows an attacker to corrupt memory structures and hijack the execution flow of the browser process.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker hosts a specially crafted website designed to trigger the memory corruption flaw when rendered by a vulnerable browser. The attacker then entices users to visit the site via phishing emails, instant messages, or by compromising legitimate websites and injecting malicious advertisements (malvertising). Once the victim visits the page, the malicious payload executes arbitrary code under the security context of the logged-in user.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
If the compromised user has administrative privileges, the attacker can gain complete control over the affected system. This enables the attacker to install unauthorized software, view, modify, or delete sensitive data, and establish persistent administrative accounts. Given that this vulnerability is actively exploited in the wild and listed in the CISA KEV catalog, it poses an immediate threat to enterprise endpoints.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
<p>A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way that Microsoft browsers access objects in memory. The vulnerability could corrupt memory in a way that could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the current user. If the current user is logged on with administrative user rights, the attacker could take control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.</p> <p>An attacker could host a specially crafted website that is designed to exploit the vulnerability through Microsoft browsers, and then convince a user to view the website. The attacker could also take advantage of compromised websites, or websites that accept or host user-provided content or advertisements, by adding specially crafted content that could exploit the vulnerability. In all cases, however, an attacker would have no way to force users to view the attacker-controlled content. Instead, an attacker would have to convince users to take action, typically via an enticement in email or instant message, or by getting them to open an email attachment.</p> <p>The security update addresses the vulnerability by modifying how Microsoft browsers handle objects in memory.</p>
