Zimbra Collaboration Suite ProxyServlet Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) Vulnerability (CVE-2019-9621) Analysis and Mitigation Guide
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTZimbra Collaboration Suite before 8.6 Patch 13, 8.7.x before 8.7.11 Patch 10, and 8.8.x before 8.8.10 Patch 7 or 8.8.x before 8.8.11 Patch 3
Unauthenticated remote attackers can exploit the ProxyServlet to access internal network resources, or chain it with other vulnerabilities (such as XXE) to steal admin credentials and achieve Remote Code Execution (RCE).
Immediately apply the official security patches corresponding to your Zimbra version and restrict external access to the ProxyServlet endpoint.
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Update the Zimbra package repository and apply the latest security patches. The following commands apply to RedHat/CentOS-based environments.
# Clean repository cache and update the Zimbra patch package
yum clean all
yum update zimbra-patch -y
# Restart Zimbra services to apply the patch
su - zimbra -c 'zmcontrol restart'2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, restrict external access to the ProxyServlet endpoint using Nginx configuration or firewall rules.
# Edit /etc/nginx/conf.d/zimbra_block.conf or Zimbra nginx template files
# Restrict external access to the ProxyServlet endpoint
location /service/proxy {
allow 127.0.0.1;
allow 10.0.0.0/8; # Replace with your trusted internal network range
deny all;
}3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Inspect the Zimbra mailbox logs to detect unauthorized access attempts targeting localhost or administrative ports via the ProxyServlet.
# Search mailbox.log for suspicious ProxyServlet requests targeting localhost or port 7071
grep -i 'ProxyServlet' /opt/zimbra/log/mailbox.log | grep -E '(127.0.0.1|localhost|7071)'
# Verify the currently installed Zimbra version and patch level
su - zimbra -c 'zmcontrol -v'Block Exploits Instantly with Managed Virtual Patching Rules
Can't patch production immediately? Deploy managed WAF rules at the edge to intercept RCE, SQLi, and deserialization payloads before they hit your origin server.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2019-9621) is a Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF, CWE-918) in the ProxyServlet component of Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS). Due to insufficient input validation within the ProxyServlet handler, an attacker can force the Zimbra server to dispatch arbitrary HTTP requests to internal or external destinations.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An unauthenticated attacker sends a crafted HTTP request targeting the ProxyServlet endpoint. By specifying loopback addresses (127.0.0.1, localhost) or internal private IP ranges, the attacker bypasses perimeter firewalls to access restricted internal services, such as the Zimbra Admin SOAP API on port 7071. In real-world campaigns, this SSRF is frequently chained with an Autodiscover servlet XXE vulnerability to extract local configuration files, retrieve admin tokens, and ultimately execute arbitrary code on the server.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As a high-severity vulnerability listed in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, this flaw has been actively exploited in the wild. Successful exploitation allows attackers to map internal networks, exfiltrate sensitive email data, compromise user credentials, and gain full administrative control over the mail infrastructure, posing a severe threat to business operations and data confidentiality.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Zimbra Collaboration Suite before 8.6 patch 13, 8.7.x before 8.7.11 patch 10, and 8.8.x before 8.8.10 patch 7 or 8.8.x before 8.8.11 patch 3 allows SSRF via the ProxyServlet component.
