Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Docker Desktop Community Edition versions prior to 2.1.0.1 on Windows platforms

Impact

Local low-privilege users can execute arbitrary code with administrative or SYSTEM privileges by hijacking credential helper binaries

Mitigation

Immediately upgrade Docker Desktop to version 2.1.0.1 or later, or restrict write permissions on the vulnerable directory

Affected Products & Version Scope

Docker Desktop Community Edition versions prior to 2.1.0.1 on Windows

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

The recommended remediation is to upgrade Docker Desktop to version 2.1.0.1 or higher. Use the following PowerShell commands to check the version and perform a silent upgrade.

powershell
# Check current Docker version
& 'C:\Program Files\Docker\Docker\resources\bin\docker.exe' --version

# Download and silently install the latest Docker Desktop
Start-BitsTransfer -Source 'https://desktop.docker.com/win/main/amd64/Docker%20Desktop%20Installer.exe' -Destination '$env:TEMP\DockerInstaller.exe'
Start-Process -FilePath '$env:TEMP\DockerInstaller.exe' -ArgumentList 'install --quiet --accept-license' -Wait

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If patching cannot be applied immediately, restrict write access to the vulnerable directory to prevent low-privilege users from placing malicious binaries.

powershell
# Define the target directory
$targetPath = '$env:SystemDrive\ProgramData\DockerDesktop\version-bin'

# Retrieve ACL and block write permissions for the Built-in Users group
$acl = Get-Acl -Path $targetPath
$usersSid = New-Object System.Security.Principal.SecurityIdentifier([System.Security.Principal.WellKnownSidType]::BuiltinUsersSid, $null)
$denyRule = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule($usersSid, 'Write, AppendData', 'ContainerInherit, ObjectInherit', 'None', 'Deny')
$acl.AddAccessRule($denyRule)
Set-Acl -Path $targetPath -AclObject $acl

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Run the following script to inspect the %PROGRAMDATA%\DockerDesktop\version-bin\ directory for unauthorized executables.

powershell
# Audit the version-bin directory for suspicious executables
$binPath = '$env:SystemDrive\ProgramData\DockerDesktop\version-bin'
if (Test-Path $binPath) {
    Get-ChildItem -Path $binPath -Filter '*.exe' | Select-Object Name, Length, CreationTime, LastWriteTime | Format-List
} else {
    Write-Host 'Directory does not exist. System may not be vulnerable or Docker is not installed.' -ForegroundColor Yellow
}

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2019-15752) arises from insecure default permission settings (CWE-732) in Docker Desktop Community Edition for Windows. The %PROGRAMDATA%\DockerDesktop\version-bin\ directory incorrectly grants write permissions to low-privileged local users. When Docker Desktop services or administrative processes attempt to authenticate or manage credentials, they execute helper binaries from this directory without verifying the integrity or absolute path of the executable.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker with local access to the Windows system can exploit this vulnerability through the following steps:

  • The attacker drops a malicious payload named docker-credential-wincred.exe into the %PROGRAMDATA%\DockerDesktop\version-bin\ directory.
  • The attacker waits for an administrator or a system service to trigger Docker authentication, restart the Docker service, or execute the docker login command.
  • Due to the search order and lack of validation, the Docker service executes the attacker's Trojan horse binary with elevated privileges (SYSTEM or Administrator), resulting in local privilege escalation.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

As a CISA KEV-listed vulnerability, this flaw poses a significant risk to enterprise environments. In shared developer environments or multi-user Windows workstations, a compromise of a low-privilege developer account can be easily leveraged to gain full control over the host operating system. This facilitates lateral movement, credential harvesting, and potential compromise of the active directory domain.
