Microsoft Internet Explorer Scripting Engine Memory Corruption Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2019-1367)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTWindows client and server environments utilizing Internet Explorer 9, 10, and 11
Attackers can execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user via a crafted webpage, potentially gaining full control of the system
Apply the official Microsoft cumulative security updates immediately, or restrict access to the vulnerable JScript.dll library as a temporary workaround
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Apply the cumulative security update (such as KB4522007) corresponding to your OS version. You can automate the update process using PowerShell.
# Install the specific cumulative update via PSWindowsUpdate module
Install-Module PSWindowsUpdate -Force -Verbose
Get-WindowsUpdate -KBArticleID KB4522007 -Install -AcceptAll -AutoReboot2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, restrict access to JScript.dll to prevent the scripting engine from executing. (Note: This may impact legacy web applications relying on JScript.)
:: Restricting access to 64-bit JScript.dll (and 32-bit on 32-bit OS)
takeown /f %windir%\system32\jscript.dll
icacls %windir%\system32\jscript.dll /deny everyone:(F)
:: Restricting access to 32-bit JScript.dll on 64-bit OS
takeown /f %windir%\syswow64\jscript.dll
icacls %windir%\syswow64\jscript.dll /deny everyone:(F)3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Verify the file version and access control lists (ACL) of JScript.dll to ensure the workaround or patch has been successfully applied.
# Check the file version and modification date of JScript.dll
Get-ItemProperty -Path 'C:\Windows\System32\jscript.dll' | Select-Object -Property VersionInfo, LastWriteTime
# Verify the ACL configuration of JScript.dll
Get-Acl -Path 'C:\Windows\System32\jscript.dll' | Format-ListBlock Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2019-1367) is a memory corruption vulnerability that exists in the way the scripting engine (JScript.dll) handles objects in memory within Internet Explorer. Due to a flaw in the garbage collection mechanism, the engine fails to properly track active objects under specific conditions, leading to Use-After-Free (UAF) or out-of-bounds write conditions (CWE-787).
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker hosts a specially crafted website designed to trigger the memory corruption and lures users to view the site via Internet Explorer. Alternatively, attackers can embed an ActiveX control or a web view control inside Microsoft Office documents or emails to force the rendering of the malicious HTML/JS payload. Once the scripting engine parses the malicious script, it corrupts the memory layout, allowing the attacker to hijack the execution flow and run arbitrary shellcode.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
This vulnerability is listed in the CISA KEV (Known Exploited Vulnerabilities) catalog, confirming active exploitation in the wild. Successful exploitation allows attackers to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the active user. If the user has administrative rights, the attacker can compromise the entire system, install malicious programs, exfiltrate sensitive data, and perform lateral movement across the enterprise network.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way that the scripting engine handles objects in memory in Internet Explorer, aka 'Scripting Engine Memory Corruption Vulnerability'. This CVE ID is unique from CVE-2019-1221.
