Microsoft SQL Server Remote Code Execution Vulnerability Advisory (CVE-2019-1068)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTMicrosoft SQL Server 2014, 2016, and 2017
An authenticated attacker can execute arbitrary code under the security context of the SQL Server Database Engine service account, potentially leading to full system compromise
Immediately apply the latest Cumulative Updates (CU) or Service Pack (SP) security patches provided by Microsoft
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch Deployment
Refer to the Microsoft Security Update Guide and apply the appropriate Cumulative Update (CU) or GDR patch for your SQL Server version:
- SQL Server 2017: Apply Cumulative Update 16 or later
- SQL Server 2016: Apply SP2 Cumulative Update 8 or later
- SQL Server 2014: Apply SP3 Cumulative Update 4 or later
2. Temporary Mitigations (If patching is delayed)
- Principle of Least Privilege: Restrict database user permissions to prevent unauthorized execution of sensitive system procedures.
- Network Segmentation: Block external access to the SQL Server default port (TCP 1433) and restrict access to trusted IP ranges or via VPN only.
- Enable Auditing: Configure SQL Server Audit to monitor and alert on anomalous query patterns and unauthorized system function calls.
Block Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
CVE-2019-1068 is a critical remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability in Microsoft SQL Server caused by improper validation of input when processing internal memory functions (CWE-20).
An attacker who has successfully authenticated to an affected SQL Server instance (even with low-privileged access) can exploit this vulnerability by executing specially crafted SQL queries or internal function calls. This triggers memory corruption, allowing the execution of arbitrary code within the security context of the SQL Server service account.
Since this vulnerability is listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog and carries a very high EPSS score of 0.94, it represents an active threat that requires immediate remediation.
