Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Windows 7, 8.1, 10, and Windows Server 2008, 2012, 2016

Impact

A local attacker with low-privilege access can exploit the ALPC interface to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges, leading to full system compromise

Mitigation

Apply the official Microsoft cumulative security updates immediately and restrict write access to system task directories

Affected Products & Version Scope

All editions of Windows 7, 8.1, 10, and Windows Server 2008, 2012, 2016

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

To remediate this vulnerability, apply the official Microsoft security updates. Use the following PowerShell commands to force-update the system:

powershell
# Install Windows Update module and apply all pending security patches
Install-Module PSWindowsUpdate -Force -SkipPublisherCheck
Get-WindowsUpdate -AcceptAll -Install -AutoReboot

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If immediate patching is not feasible, restrict write access to the legacy Tasks directories to prevent low-privileged users from creating malicious hard links:

cmd
:: Restrict write permissions on Tasks directories for standard users
icacls "C:\Windows\System32\Tasks" /deny Users:(W)
icacls "C:\Windows\Tasks" /deny Users:(W)

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Monitor the system for unauthorized task creation and suspicious file modifications in the Task Scheduler directories using the following PowerShell script:

powershell
# Audit files modified in the Tasks directory within the last 7 days
Get-ChildItem -Path "C:\Windows\System32\Tasks" -Recurse |
    Where-Object { $_.LastWriteTime -gt (Get-Date).AddDays(-7) } |
    Select-Object FullName, LastWriteTime, Length

# Query Task Scheduler operational logs for suspicious task registration events (Event ID 106)
Get-WinEvent -FilterHashtable @{LogName='Microsoft-Windows-TaskScheduler/Operational'; ID=106} -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
    Select-Object -First 50 | Format-Table TimeCreated, Id, Message -AutoSize

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability exists in the way the Windows operating system handles Advanced Local Procedure Call (ALPC) requests. Specifically, a flaw in the Task Scheduler service's SchRpcRegisterTask API allows a local user to trigger a DACL (Discretionary Access Control List) modification on arbitrary files. Because the Task Scheduler runs with SYSTEM privileges, it improperly processes file operations without verifying the caller's impersonation level, leading to an arbitrary file write/permission modification vulnerability.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker with local access executes the exploit using the following steps:

  • The attacker calls the Task Scheduler's ALPC interface to register a temporary task.
  • The Task Scheduler service attempts to write a temporary file inside the c:\windows asks directory.
  • Before the write operation completes, the attacker replaces the target file path with a hard link pointing to a critical system file (e.g., a system DLL or configuration file).
  • The high-privileged Task Scheduler service follows the hard link and modifies the DACL of the target system file, granting write permissions to the low-privilege user.
  • The attacker overwrites the target system file with a malicious payload, which is subsequently executed by a high-privileged process, resulting in arbitrary code execution as SYSTEM.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

As a vulnerability listed in the CISA KEV catalog, CVE-2018-8440 poses a severe threat to enterprise environments. If an attacker gains initial access to an endpoint or server via phishing or web exploitation, they can immediately leverage this vulnerability to escalate privileges to SYSTEM. This bypasses local security controls, facilitates credential dumping (e.g., LSASS harvesting), and enables lateral movement across the entire corporate network.
