Adobe Flash Player Use-After-Free Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2018-4878) Security Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTAdobe Flash Player versions prior to 28.0.0.161 (specifically affecting Primetime SDK components)
Remote attackers can execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the current user by tricking them into opening crafted Flash content
Upgrade Adobe Flash Player to version 28.0.0.161 or later, or completely uninstall/disable Flash Player across the enterprise
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Since Adobe Flash Player has reached End-of-Life (EOL), complete uninstallation is highly recommended. For legacy environments requiring package updates, use the following commands:
# Update Flash Player plugin on RedHat/CentOS systems
sudo yum update flash-plugin -y2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
To mitigate the risk immediately, disable Flash Player execution in Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office using the registry Kill-Bit configuration.
# Disable Flash ActiveX control via Registry Kill-Bit
Set-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}' -Name 'Compatibility Flags' -Value 1024
Set-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}' -Name 'Compatibility Flags' -Value 10243. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Use the following PowerShell script to audit endpoints and detect vulnerable Flash Player installations.
# Audit script to detect vulnerable Flash Player versions
$flashPath = '${env:SystemRoot}\System32\Macromed\Flash'
if (Test-Path $flashPath) {
Get-ChildItem -Path $flashPath -Filter '*.ocx' | ForEach-Object {
$version = $_.VersionInfo.ProductVersion
Write-Host 'Detected Flash Player Version:' $version
if ([version]$version -lt [version]'28.0.0.161') {
Write-Warning 'Vulnerable Flash Player version detected! Immediate action required.'
}
}
} else {
Write-Host 'Flash Player is not installed in the default system directory.'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
A critical Use-After-Free (UAF) vulnerability (CVE-2018-4878) exists in the Primetime SDK component of Adobe Flash Player. The root cause is a dangling pointer associated with the media player's handling of listener objects. When a specific listener object is freed from memory, the reference pointer is not properly cleared, allowing subsequent operations to reuse the freed memory address.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
Attackers exploit this vulnerability by embedding malicious ActionScript code inside a Shockwave Flash (.swf) file, which is often delivered via malicious web pages or embedded within Microsoft Office documents. When the victim opens the document or visits the page, the Flash Player processes the malicious SWF, triggers the premature release of the listener object, and overwrites the freed memory space with attacker-controlled shellcode. The dangling pointer is then dereferenced, redirecting execution flow to the shellcode.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
This vulnerability was actively exploited in the wild as a zero-day in early 2018. With an EPSS score of 0.9028, it represents an extremely high-risk threat. Successful exploitation allows complete endpoint compromise, enabling attackers to establish persistence, exfiltrate sensitive business data, and move laterally within the corporate network.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
A use-after-free vulnerability was discovered in Adobe Flash Player before 28.0.0.161. This vulnerability occurs due to a dangling pointer in the Primetime SDK related to media player handling of listener objects. A successful attack can lead to arbitrary code execution. This was exploited in the wild in January and February 2018.
