Microsoft .NET Framework SOAP WSDL Parser Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2017-8759) Analysis and Mitigation Guide
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTSystems running Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, 3.5, 3.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, and 4.7
Remote attackers can execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the current user via a malicious document or application
Apply the official Microsoft security patches immediately and restrict untrusted outbound SOAP/WSDL connections
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
The primary remediation is to apply the official security updates provided by Microsoft. Use the following PowerShell commands to scan for and install missing security updates on Windows systems.
# Install and import the Windows Update module to apply security patches
Install-Module PSWindowsUpdate -Force -Verbose
Get-WindowsUpdate -AcceptAll -Install -AutoReboot2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, restrict outbound HTTP/SOAP requests to untrusted external servers. Additionally, block Microsoft Word from loading RTF files using the registry to mitigate the primary attack vector.
# Block Microsoft Word from opening RTF files via Registry
$regPath = 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\Security\FileBlock'
if (-not (Test-Path $regPath)) { New-Item -Path $regPath -Force }
New-ItemProperty -Path $regPath -Name 'RtfFiles' -Value 2 -PropertyType DWord -Force3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Verify the installed .NET Framework versions and inspect the temporary directories for suspicious C# source files generated by the dynamic compilation process.
# Check installed .NET Framework versions
Get-ChildItem 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\NET Framework Setup\NDP' -Recurse |
Get-ItemProperty -Name Version -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
Select-Object PSChildName, Version
# Scan for recently created temporary C# files that might indicate exploitation attempts
Get-ChildItem -Path $env:TEMP -Filter '*.cs' -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
Where-Object { $_.LastWriteTime -gt (Get-Date).AddDays(-7) }Block Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability exists in the Microsoft .NET Framework when the System.Runtime.Remoting.MetadataServices.IsValidName method fails to properly sanitize input during the parsing of WSDL (Web Services Description Language) documents. When the SoapSuds tool or associated libraries dynamically generate and compile C# source code from a WSDL definition, an attacker can inject carriage return and line feed (\r\ ) characters followed by malicious C# code. This causes the parser to inject the arbitrary code directly into the generated source file before compilation.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
In a typical exploitation scenario, an attacker delivers a malicious Rich Text Format (RTF) or Microsoft Office document via spear-phishing. When the victim opens the document, an embedded OLE object triggers an outbound request to a malicious SOAP WSDL service hosted by the attacker. The .NET Framework WSDL parser processes the response, and due to the injection flaw, the C# compiler (csc.exe) compiles the injected malicious class. This leads to the execution of arbitrary payloads, such as downloading and executing a malicious DLL, in the background.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As a highly critical vulnerability listed in the CISA KEV catalog with an EPSS score of 0.887 (88.7%), CVE-2017-8759 has been actively exploited in the wild by advanced persistent threat (APT) actors. Successful exploitation grants the attacker full control over the compromised endpoint, enabling lateral movement, sensitive data exfiltration, and ransomware deployment, posing a severe threat to enterprise infrastructure.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, 3.5, 3.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2 and 4.7 allow an attacker to execute code remotely via a malicious document or application, aka ".NET Framework Remote Code Execution Vulnerability."
