Microsoft Windows Win32k Kernel-Mode Driver Use-After-Free Local Privilege Escalation (CVE-2017-0263)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTLegacy and modern Windows operating systems including Windows 7, 8.1, 10, and Windows Server 2008, 2012, 2016 utilizing the win32k.sys driver.
A local attacker can execute a specially crafted application to gain elevated SYSTEM privileges, completely bypassing OS security boundaries.
Apply the official Microsoft security patches immediately and restrict execution privileges for untrusted local users.
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Deploy the official cumulative security updates provided by Microsoft. You can force the installation of missing security updates using the following PowerShell commands:
# Install and run Windows Update module to apply latest security patches
Install-Module PSWindowsUpdate -Force -Verbose
Get-WindowsUpdate -AcceptAll -Install -AutoReboot2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, restrict the execution of untrusted binaries using AppLocker or Software Restriction Policies (SRP) to prevent local exploit execution.
# Enable and start Application Identity Service for AppLocker enforcement
Set-Service -Name 'AppIDSvc' -StartupType Automatic
Start-Service -Name 'AppIDSvc'3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Verify the version of the win32k.sys driver to determine if the system is running a vulnerable version.
# Check the file version of win32k.sys
$sysPath = '${env:SystemRoot}\System32\win32k.sys'
if (Test-Path $sysPath) {
$fileVersion = (Get-Item $sysPath).VersionInfo.FileVersion
Write-Host 'Current win32k.sys Version:' $fileVersion
Write-Host 'Verify this version against Microsoft KB advisory for CVE-2017-0263.'
} else {
Write-Warning 'win32k.sys was not found in the default directory.'
}Block Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability is a Use-After-Free (UAF) flaw residing in the win32k.sys kernel-mode driver of Microsoft Windows. The root cause lies in the improper handling of menu objects in memory during popup menu destruction. When specific window messages (such as WM_NCDESTROY or MN_ENDMENU) are processed abnormally, the kernel fails to clear pointers to freed menu objects, leaving dangling pointers that can be subsequently dereferenced.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker with local user access executes a crafted application that registers custom window classes and menu structures. By hooking the callback functions triggered during menu destruction, the attacker forces the release of the menu object while the kernel still maintains a reference to it. Using Heap Feng-Shui techniques, the attacker reclaims the freed memory space with a fake object. When the kernel attempts to access the menu object, it operates on the attacker-controlled fake object, leading to an arbitrary Write-What-Where primitive. This is ultimately leveraged to overwrite the current process token with the SYSTEM token.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As a vulnerability listed in the CISA KEV catalog, CVE-2017-0263 has been actively exploited in the wild by advanced persistent threat (APT) groups. Local Privilege Escalation (LPE) vulnerabilities are critical components of multi-stage attacks, often paired with browser exploits or phishing campaigns to escape sandboxes and gain full administrative control over endpoints and servers, leading to potential domain compromise and ransomware deployment.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
The kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2, Windows RT 8.1, Windows 10 Gold, 1511, 1607, 1703, and Windows Server 2016 allow local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, aka "Win32k Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability."
