Microsoft Windows GDI Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (CVE-2017-0001) Security Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTWindows Vista SP2, 7 SP1, 8.1, RT 8.1, 10 (Gold, 1511, 1607) and Windows Server 2008 SP2/R2 SP1, 2012 Gold/R2.
Local attackers can execute arbitrary code in kernel mode and gain SYSTEM privileges via a crafted application.
Apply the official Microsoft cumulative security updates immediately and restrict local execution privileges on unpatched systems.
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Apply the official Microsoft security updates (such as MS17-013). You can force the installation of the required KB patches using PowerShell.
# Install and import PSWindowsUpdate module to apply specific security updates
Install-Module PSWindowsUpdate -Force -Verbose
Get-WindowsUpdate -KBArticleID KB4013075, KB4012212, KB4012215 -Install -AcceptAll -AutoReboot2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, restrict local execution policies using AppLocker or Software Restriction Policies (SRP), and audit local administrator group memberships to minimize the attack surface.
# Audit local Administrators group members
Get-LocalGroupMember -Group 'Administrators'
# Example: Remove unauthorized local user 'testuser' from the Administrators group
Remove-LocalGroupMember -Group 'Administrators' -Member 'testuser'3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Verify the patch level by checking the file version of win32k.sys and monitor the Windows Security Event Log for suspicious privilege escalation attempts.
# Check the file version of win32k.sys to verify patch status
$sysPath = '${env:SystemRoot}\System32\win32k.sys'
if (Test-Path $sysPath) {
$fileVersion = (Get-Item $sysPath).VersionInfo.FileVersion
Write-Host 'Current win32k.sys Version:' $fileVersion
# Compare this version against the Microsoft release notes for your OS build
}Block Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability is an elevation of privilege (EoP) vulnerability in the Windows Graphics Device Interface (GDI) when handling objects in memory. The GDI kernel-mode driver (win32k.sys) fails to properly validate graphic objects and bitmap structures passed from user-mode applications, leading to memory corruption or out-of-bounds write conditions.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
A local attacker with low-privilege access executes a specially crafted malicious application designed to call GDI APIs. The application manipulates GDI palette objects or bitmap structures to control the kernel memory layout. By corrupting adjacent kernel memory, the attacker can locate and overwrite the process token pointer, replacing their low-privilege token with the 'NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM' token (Token Stealing) to achieve full administrative control.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As this vulnerability is listed in the CISA KEV catalog, it has been actively exploited in the wild. It poses a severe threat to enterprise environments, as attackers commonly leverage local privilege escalation vulnerabilities as a stepping stone for lateral movement and full domain compromise after gaining initial access.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
The Graphics Device Interface (GDI) in Microsoft Windows Vista SP2; Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1; Windows 7 SP1; Windows 8.1; Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2; Windows RT 8.1; and Windows 10 Gold, 1511, and 1607 allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, aka "Windows GDI Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability."
