Adobe Flash Player Use-After-Free Remote Code Execution (RCE) Vulnerability (CVE-2016-7855) Security Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTAdobe Flash Player before 23.0.0.205 on Windows and OS X, and before 11.2.202.643 on Linux
Remote attackers can exploit memory corruption to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the active user
Since Adobe Flash Player has reached End-of-Life (EOL), it is highly recommended to completely uninstall the software or upgrade to the patched versions
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Because Adobe Flash Player is EOL, the primary recommendation is complete removal. If legacy systems require temporary retention, use the following commands to update to the patched versions.
# For RedHat/CentOS-based Linux systems
yum update flash-plugin -y
# For Debian/Ubuntu-based Linux systems
apt-get update && apt-get --only-upgrade install flashplugin-installer -y2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate uninstallation is not feasible, disable Flash execution within browsers or apply system-wide restrictions via registry modifications.
# Disable Flash Player ActiveX control in Internet Explorer via PowerShell
Set-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}' -Name 'Compatibility Flags' -Value 10243. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Run the following script to detect if vulnerable legacy Flash Player packages are installed on your Linux endpoints.
# Audit script to detect installed Flash Player packages on Linux
if dpkg -l | grep -i flash > /dev/null; then
echo '[WARNING] Flash Player detected via dpkg:'
dpkg -l | grep -i flash
elif rpm -qa | grep -i flash > /dev/null; then
echo '[WARNING] Flash Player detected via rpm:'
rpm -qa | grep -i flash
else
echo '[OK] No Flash Player package detected.'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2016-7855) is a critical Use-After-Free (UAF) flaw in Adobe Flash Player. It occurs when the application continues to reference a memory pointer after the corresponding object has been deallocated from memory. Due to improper state management in the Flash engine, an attacker can manipulate the memory layout to reuse the freed memory space for malicious payloads.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker exploits this vulnerability by hosting a specially crafted SWF (Shockwave Flash) file on a malicious website or distributing it via email attachments. When a victim opens the file, the Flash Player engine parses the malicious ActionScript, triggering premature object destruction. The attacker then fills the freed memory slot with controlled shellcode. When the engine attempts to reuse the dangling pointer, execution flow is redirected to the attacker's shellcode, achieving Remote Code Execution (RCE). This vulnerability was actively exploited in the wild in October 2016.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
Successful exploitation allows an attacker to gain full control of the compromised endpoint. This can serve as an initial entry point into the corporate network, leading to lateral movement, sensitive data exfiltration, or ransomware deployment. Given its active exploitation history and inclusion in the CISA KEV catalog, this vulnerability poses a severe risk to legacy environments.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Use-after-free vulnerability in Adobe Flash Player before 23.0.0.205 on Windows and OS X and before 11.2.202.643 on Linux allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors, as exploited in the wild in October 2016.
