Adobe Flash Player ActionScript 3 ByteArray Use-After-Free Remote Code Execution (CVE-2015-5119)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTAdobe Flash Player 13.x through 18.x on Windows/OS X, and 11.x through 11.2.202.468 on Linux
Remote attackers can execute arbitrary code or trigger a denial of service (system crash) via crafted Flash content
Completely uninstall Adobe Flash Player or disable the Flash plugin across all web browsers and operating systems
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Since Adobe Flash Player has reached End-of-Life (EOL), the recommended remediation is to completely purge the software from all endpoints. Use the following commands to uninstall Flash Player on Linux systems:
# Remove Flash Player from Debian/Ubuntu-based systems
sudo apt-get remove --purge flashplugin-installer pepperflashplugin-nonfree
sudo apt-get autoremove
# Remove Flash Player from RedHat/CentOS-based systems
sudo yum remove flash-plugin2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate uninstallation is not feasible, enforce a strict browser policy to block Flash execution. Below is a PowerShell command to disable Flash execution via Group Policy registry settings for Google Chrome:
# Disable Flash Player execution in Google Chrome via Registry
New-Item -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome' -Force
New-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome' -Name 'DefaultPluginsSetting' -Value 2 -PropertyType DWord -Force
New-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome' -Name 'PluginsAllowedForUrls' -Value @() -PropertyType MultiString -Force3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
To identify if legacy and vulnerable Flash Player shared libraries are still present on your Linux servers, execute the following audit script:
# Scan the filesystem for active Adobe Flash Player shared libraries
echo '[*] Searching for vulnerable Flash Player binaries...'
find /usr/lib /usr/lib64 /usr/local -name '*libflashplayer.so' 2>/dev/null
# Extract version strings from any discovered Flash binaries
for lib in $(find /usr/lib /usr/lib64 -name '*libflashplayer.so' 2>/dev/null); do
echo "[+] Found library: $lib"
strings "$lib" | grep -i 'LNX' | head -n 5

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability is a Use-After-Free (UAF) flaw residing in the ByteArray class implementation within ActionScript 3 (AS3) in Adobe Flash Player. The root cause lies in the improper handling of memory reallocation when the ByteArray capacity is modified. By overriding the default valueOf method of a custom object passed during the resizing operation, an attacker can execute arbitrary ActionScript code mid-operation, leading to premature memory deallocation while retaining active references.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker exploits this vulnerability by hosting a malicious Flash (.swf) file on a website or embedding it within an email. The attack sequence proceeds as follows:
- The malicious Flash script instantiates a
ByteArrayand allocates a specific memory buffer. - It triggers a resizing operation on the
ByteArray, passing an object with an overriddenvalueOfmethod as an argument. - During the execution of the overridden
valueOfmethod, the script forces the release or reallocation of the originalByteArraybuffer. - Once
valueOfreturns, the Flash Player engine attempts to write to the previously freed memory address, resulting in a Use-After-Free condition that allows the attacker to overwrite critical pointers and hijack the execution flow.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
This vulnerability was actively exploited in the wild as a zero-day exploit, notably leaked during the Hacking Team breach in July 2015. Successful exploitation allows complete compromise of the host operating system under the context of the running browser process. This can lead to unauthorized data exfiltration, deployment of ransomware, and lateral movement within the corporate network, posing a severe threat to enterprise infrastructure.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Use-after-free vulnerability in the ByteArray class in the ActionScript 3 (AS3) implementation in Adobe Flash Player 13.x through 13.0.0.296 and 14.x through 18.0.0.194 on Windows and OS X and 11.x through 11.2.202.468 on Linux allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via crafted Flash content that overrides a valueOf function, as exploited in the wild in July 2015.
