Microsoft Windows Kerberos KDC Signature Verification Bypass and Domain Privilege Escalation (CVE-2014-6324)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTActive Directory Domain Controllers running Windows Server 2003, 2008, 2012, and associated Windows client operating systems
A remote authenticated domain user can forge Kerberos ticket signatures (PAC) to escalate privileges to Domain Administrator, leading to a complete domain compromise
Immediately apply the MS14-068 security update and perform a double reset of the krbtgt account password to invalidate existing forged tickets
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Apply the MS14-068 (KB3011780) security update to all Domain Controllers immediately. Upgrading legacy operating systems to currently supported Windows Server versions is highly recommended.
# Verify if the MS14-068 patch (KB3011780) is installed on the system
Get-HotFix -Id KB3011780
# If missing, trigger Windows Update to install the required patch
Install-WindowsUpdate -KBArticleID KB3011780 -AcceptAll -AutoReboot2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
There is no viable workaround that fully mitigates this vulnerability without applying the official patch. However, network-level access to Domain Controllers should be strictly restricted to trusted subnets.
# Restrict inbound Kerberos traffic (Port 88) to authorized administrative subnets only
New-NetFirewallRule -DisplayName 'Block External Kerberos' -Direction Inbound -LocalPort 88 -Protocol TCP -Action Block -RemoteAddress 'Any'
# (Note: Customize the RemoteAddress parameter to allow only legitimate internal subnets in production)3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
After patching, you must reset the krbtgt account password twice to invalidate any outstanding forged Kerberos tickets that may have been generated prior to the patch.
# Check the last password change timestamp for the krbtgt account
Get-ADUser -Identity 'krbtgt' -Properties PasswordLastSet | Select-Object Name, PasswordLastSet
# Query Security Event Logs for anomalous Kerberos ticket requests (Event ID 4769)
Get-WinEvent -FilterHashtable @{LogName='Security'; ID=4769} -MaxEvents 50 |
Where-Object {$_.Message -like '*0x12*' -or $_.Message -like '*0x17*'} |
Format-Table TimeCreated, Id, Message -WrapBlock Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability exists in the Microsoft Kerberos Key Distribution Center (KDC) implementation within Active Directory (AD). When issuing Kerberos tickets, the KDC includes a Privilege Attribute Certificate (PAC) containing the user's group memberships. To prevent tampering, the PAC is signed using cryptographic keys. However, vulnerable KDCs fail to properly validate the signature algorithm specified in the PAC. This allows an attacker to specify a weak or arbitrary checksum algorithm (such as MD5) and sign the modified PAC with a key of their own choosing, which the KDC incorrectly validates as authentic.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker with valid, low-privileged domain user credentials can execute the following attack chain:
- Request a standard Ticket Granting Ticket (TGT) from the KDC.
- Modify the PAC data within the TGT to append high-privileged group SIDs, such as 'Domain Admins' (RID 512).
- Re-sign the tampered PAC using a custom key and specify a weak checksum algorithm that the vulnerable KDC accepts.
- Present the forged TGT to the KDC to request a Service Ticket (TGS). The KDC bypasses proper signature verification, trusts the forged PAC, and issues a highly privileged TGS, granting the attacker full Domain Admin rights.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
With a CVSS score of 8.8 and active exploitation in the wild (CISA KEV listed), this vulnerability poses an extreme risk to enterprise environments. Successful exploitation bypasses all logical access controls within the Active Directory forest. Attackers can deploy enterprise-wide ransomware, exfiltrate sensitive intellectual property, and establish persistent administrative backdoors, resulting in catastrophic business disruption and loss of trust.
