Adobe Flash Player Integer Underflow Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2014-0497)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTAdobe Flash Player before 11.7.700.261, 11.8.x through 12.0.x before 12.0.0.44 on Windows/macOS, and before 11.2.202.336 on Linux
Remote attackers can execute arbitrary code and gain full control of the target system by enticing users to visit a website containing a specially crafted Flash (.swf) file
Immediately uninstall legacy Adobe Flash Player or upgrade to patched versions, and disable Flash execution in all web browsers
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Since Adobe Flash Player has reached End-of-Life (EOL), the recommended action is complete removal. If legacy environments require package updates, use the following commands:
# Update Flash Plugin on RedHat/CentOS systems
sudo yum update flash-plugin -y
# Update Flash Plugin on Debian/Ubuntu systems
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install flashplugin-installer -y2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
To mitigate the risk immediately, disable Flash execution via registry or browser policies. The following registry modification disables the Flash ActiveX control in Internet Explorer:
# Disable Flash Player ActiveX control via PowerShell
New-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}' -Name 'Compatibility Flags' -Value 1024 -PropertyType DWord -Force3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Run the following script to detect if any vulnerable Flash Player packages are installed on Linux endpoints:
# Check for installed Flash Player packages on Linux
if dpkg -l | grep -i flash; then
echo '[WARNING] Flash Player package detected via dpkg. Please remove it.'
fi
if rpm -qa | grep -i flash; then
echo '[WARNING] Flash Player package detected via rpm. Please remove it.'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2014-0497) is an integer underflow (CWE-191) vulnerability residing within the ActionScript Virtual Machine (AVM) or media parsing engine of Adobe Flash Player. Due to insufficient validation of input values when calculating memory allocation sizes or array bounds, an integer value underflows into a negative number, which is subsequently interpreted as a very large unsigned integer. This leads to a heap-based buffer overflow when the application attempts to write more data than the allocated buffer can hold.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker exploits this vulnerability by hosting a malicious .swf file containing crafted ActionScript bytecode on a web server. When a victim with a vulnerable Flash Player version visits the malicious webpage, the Flash Player parses the malformed file, triggering the integer underflow. This allows the attacker to corrupt memory structures, bypass security mitigations, hijack the browser process execution flow, and execute arbitrary shellcode. This vulnerability is listed in CISA's KEV catalog and has an EPSS score of 0.9988, indicating active exploitation in the wild.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
Successful exploitation allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the active user process. If the compromised process runs with administrative privileges, the entire endpoint can be fully compromised. This can serve as an initial access vector for corporate network intrusion, leading to data exfiltration, ransomware deployment, and lateral movement across internal infrastructure.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Integer underflow in Adobe Flash Player before 11.7.700.261 and 11.8.x through 12.0.x before 12.0.0.44 on Windows and Mac OS X, and before 11.2.202.336 on Linux, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors.
