Adobe Flash Player Firefox Sandbox Bypass and Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2013-0643, CISA KEV)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTAdobe Flash Player before 10.3.183.67 and 11.x before 11.6.602.171 on Windows/macOS, and before 11.2.202.273 on Linux (specifically within Firefox plugin environments)
Remote attackers can bypass the Firefox browser sandbox and execute arbitrary code on the host system via crafted malicious SWF content
Since Adobe Flash Player has reached End-of-Life (EOL), the recommended mitigation is to completely uninstall Flash Player from all endpoints
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Adobe Flash Player has reached End-of-Life (EOL) and no longer receives security updates. The only secure remediation is to completely uninstall the software. On Windows, you can use the following PowerShell script to silently uninstall Flash Player:
# Silently uninstall Adobe Flash Player from Windows endpoints
$FlashApps = Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_Product | Where-Object { $_.Name -like '*Adobe Flash Player*' }
foreach ($App in $FlashApps) {
Write-Output 'Uninstalling: $($App.Name)'
$App.Uninstall() | Out-Null
}2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate uninstallation is not feasible due to legacy dependencies, disable the Flash plugin within the browser or isolate the plugin binaries on Linux systems to prevent execution.
# Disable and isolate the Flash Player plugin on Linux systems
sudo mkdir -p /usr/lib/flash-plugin/disabled_binaries
sudo mv /usr/lib/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/flash-plugin/disabled_binaries/ 2>/dev/null || true
sudo mv /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/flash-plugin/disabled_binaries/ 2>/dev/null || true3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
To verify if any vulnerable Flash Player packages are still installed on your Linux servers, run the following package manager audit commands:
# For Debian/Ubuntu-based systems
dpkg -l | grep -i 'flash-plugin'
# For RedHat/CentOS-based systems
rpm -qa | grep -i 'flash'Block Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2013-0643) exists in the sandbox implementation of the Adobe Flash Player plugin when running inside the Mozilla Firefox browser. Due to improper privilege restriction (CWE-269) within the Firefox Protected Mode context, the plugin fails to isolate execution threads properly, allowing low-privilege processes to escape their restricted environment.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker exploits this vulnerability by hosting a specially crafted Shockwave Flash (.swf) file on a malicious or compromised website. When a victim visits the website using Firefox, the browser loads the Flash plugin to render the SWF content. During parsing, the malicious payload triggers a privilege escalation flaw, bypassing the Firefox sandbox boundaries and executing arbitrary system commands with the privileges of the logged-in user.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
This vulnerability was actively exploited in the wild as a zero-day in February 2013. Successful exploitation leads to complete compromise of the victim's endpoint, allowing attackers to install malware, exfiltrate sensitive data, or establish a persistent foothold within the corporate network. Although Flash is deprecated, legacy systems still running the software remain highly vulnerable.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
The Firefox sandbox in Adobe Flash Player before 10.3.183.67 and 11.x before 11.6.602.171 on Windows and Mac OS X, and before 10.3.183.67 and 11.x before 11.2.202.273 on Linux, does not properly restrict privileges, which makes it easier for remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted SWF content, as exploited in the wild in February 2013.
