Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Adobe Flash Player versions prior to 11.4.402.265

Impact

Remote attackers can trigger an integer overflow via malformed arguments, leading to arbitrary code execution on the target system

Mitigation

Completely uninstall legacy Flash Player or upgrade to a patched version, and disable Flash execution across all web browsers

Affected Products & Version Scope

Adobe Flash Player versions prior to 11.4.402.265 across all platforms (Windows, macOS, Linux)

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Since Adobe Flash Player has reached End-of-Life (EOL), the recommended action is to completely remove it from all systems. If legacy environments require retention, ensure the software is updated to version 11.4.402.265 or higher.

To audit and silently uninstall Flash Player on Windows via PowerShell:

powershell
# Check for installed Adobe Flash Player instances
Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_Product | Where-Object { $_.Name -like '*Adobe Flash Player*' } | Select-Object Name, Version

# Download and run the official Adobe Flash Player uninstaller silently
Start-BitsTransfer -Source 'https://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/support/uninstall_flash_player.exe' -Destination '$env:TEMP\uninstall_flash_player.exe'
Start-Process -FilePath '$env:TEMP\uninstall_flash_player.exe' -ArgumentList '-uninstall' -Wait -NoNewWindow

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If immediate uninstallation is not feasible, enforce policies to block Flash execution within web browsers and the operating system.

Apply the following registry modifications to disable Flash in Internet Explorer and Google Chrome:

reg
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

; Disable Flash Player ActiveX control in Internet Explorer
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}]
"Compatibility Flags"=dword:00000400

; Block Flash plugin execution in Google Chrome
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome]
"DefaultPluginsSetting"=dword:00000002

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Use the following script to scan for vulnerable Flash Player shared libraries on Linux endpoints:

bash
# Locate libflashplayer.so files and extract version strings
find / -name "libflashplayer.so" 2>/dev/null | while read -r file; do
  echo "Checking: $file"
  strings "$file" | grep -i "LNX " | head -n 1
done

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2012-5054) is an integer overflow (CWE-190) located within the copyRawDataTo method of the Matrix3D class in Adobe Flash Player. The copyRawDataTo method is responsible for copying 3D transformation matrix data into a Vector object. Due to insufficient validation of the input arguments, passing extremely large or malformed integer values causes an integer overflow during the internal memory allocation size calculation. This results in the allocation of a buffer that is significantly smaller than required.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker exploits this vulnerability by hosting a specially crafted SWF file containing malicious ActionScript code on a website or distributing it via email attachments. When a victim visits the compromised page and the SWF file is loaded, the Matrix3D.copyRawDataTo() method is invoked with anomalous arguments. The resulting integer overflow leads to an undersized heap buffer allocation. Subsequent copy operations write matrix data beyond the allocated boundary, triggering a heap-based buffer overflow. This allows the attacker to corrupt memory structures, hijack the execution flow, and execute arbitrary shellcode within the context of the running process.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

With a CVSS score of 8.8 and its inclusion in the CISA KEV catalog, this vulnerability represents a high-severity threat that has been actively exploited in the wild. Successful exploitation allows complete compromise of the victim's endpoint, enabling attackers to install malware, exfiltrate sensitive data, or establish a persistent foothold to pivot further into the corporate network.
