Adobe Flash Player and Reader Object Type Confusion Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2011-0611)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTAdobe Flash Player before 10.2.154.27, Adobe Reader/Acrobat 9.x and 10.x, and Microsoft Office documents containing embedded Flash (.swf) files.
Remote attackers can execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (DoS) via crafted Flash content embedded in documents or web pages.
Immediately uninstall legacy Adobe Flash Player, update Adobe Reader/Acrobat to the patched versions, and restrict Flash execution in Office documents.
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Since Adobe Flash Player has reached End-of-Life (EOL), the recommended action is to completely remove Flash Player from all systems. Use the following PowerShell commands to uninstall Flash and upgrade Adobe Reader to a secure version.
# Silently uninstall Adobe Flash Player from Windows
Uninstall-Package -Name 'Adobe Flash Player' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
# Upgrade Adobe Acrobat Reader to the latest secure version using winget
winget upgrade --id Adobe.Acrobat.Reader.64-bit --silent2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
To mitigate risks before complete removal, apply registry modifications to disable Flash rendering in Microsoft Office and Adobe Reader.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
; Set ActiveX Kill-Bit for Adobe Flash Player to block execution in Office
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}]
"Compatibility Flags"=dword:00000400
; Disable Flash Player execution within Adobe Reader
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\FeatureLockDown]
"bEnableFlash"=dword:000000003. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Search for the presence of the vulnerable authplay.dll or related Flash libraries across your endpoints to identify potential exposure.
# Search for vulnerable Authplay libraries on macOS/Linux systems
echo 'Searching for Authplay binaries...'
find / -name 'libauthplay.so' -o -name 'AuthPlayLib.bundle' 2>/dev/null
# PowerShell command to locate authplay.dll on Windows endpoints
# Get-ChildItem -Path 'C:\Program Files' -Filter 'authplay.dll' -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinueBlock Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2011-0611) is an object type confusion (CWE-843) vulnerability residing in the ActionScript Virtual Machine (AVM2) of Adobe Flash Player. It is triggered when Flash Player parses a crafted SWF file that contains a size inconsistency within a 'group of included constants'. This inconsistency, combined with ActionScript code that adds custom functions to prototypes and manipulates Date objects, causes the engine to misinterpret object types in memory, leading to arbitrary memory access.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
In-the-wild exploitation of this vulnerability was heavily observed in spear-phishing campaigns. Attackers distributed malicious Microsoft Office documents (.doc, .xls) containing embedded .swf files. When a victim opens the document, the embedded Authplay.dll (or AuthPlayLib.bundle) is loaded to render the Flash content. The malicious ActionScript then triggers the type confusion, performs heap spraying to bypass exploit mitigations, and executes arbitrary shellcode with the privileges of the logged-in user.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As a highly critical vulnerability listed in CISA's KEV catalog, successful exploitation allows complete system compromise. Attackers can gain initial access to corporate endpoints, move laterally across the internal network, exfiltrate sensitive business data, or deploy ransomware, posing severe operational and financial risks to the organization.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Adobe Flash Player before 10.2.154.27 on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and Solaris and 10.2.156.12 and earlier on Android; Adobe AIR before 2.6.19140; and Authplay.dll (aka AuthPlayLib.bundle) in Adobe Reader 9.x before 9.4.4 and 10.x through 10.0.1 on Windows, Adobe Reader 9.x before 9.4.4 and 10.x before 10.0.3 on Mac OS X, and Adobe Acrobat 9.x before 9.4.4 and 10.x before 10.0.3 on Windows and Mac OS X allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via crafted Flash content; as demonstrated by a Microsoft Office document with an embedded .swf file that has a size inconsistency in a "group of included constants," object type confusion, ActionScript that adds custom functions to prototypes, and Date objects; and as exploited in the wild in April 2011.
