Adobe Reader and Acrobat Use-After-Free Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2009-4324)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTAdobe Reader and Acrobat 9.x before 9.3, and 8.x before 8.2 on Windows and Mac OS X
Remote attackers can execute arbitrary code on the target system by tricking a user into opening a specially crafted PDF file
Immediately upgrade to patched versions (9.3 / 8.2 or higher) and restrict execution of untrusted PDF files
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Apply the official security updates from Adobe to upgrade to version 9.3 or 8.2/higher. For enterprise deployment, use the following silent installation command:
# Silent installation of Adobe Reader update patch
Start-Process msiexec.exe -ArgumentList '/p AdbeRdrUpd930_all_incr.msp /qn /norestart' -Wait2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If patching cannot be applied immediately, disable Acrobat JavaScript globally via the registry to mitigate the primary attack vector:
# Disable Acrobat JavaScript in registry for Adobe Reader 9.0
New-ItemProperty -Path 'HKCU:\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\9.0\JSPrefs' -Name 'bEnableJS' -Value 0 -PropertyType DWord -Force3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Run the following PowerShell script to audit endpoints and identify vulnerable installations of Adobe Reader:
# Audit installed Adobe Reader versions on the system
$uninstallPath = 'HKLM:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\*'
Get-ItemProperty $uninstallPath | Where-Object { $_.DisplayName -like '*Adobe Reader*' } | Select-Object DisplayName, DisplayVersionBlock Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
A Use-After-Free (UAF) vulnerability exists in the Doc.media.newPlayer method within Multimedia.api in Adobe Reader and Acrobat. The root cause lies in improper memory management where a media player object is referenced after it has been freed from memory. This flaw is triggered when parsing specifically crafted PDF files containing ZLib compressed streams, leading to memory corruption.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker crafts a malicious PDF document containing embedded JavaScript and ZLib compressed streams. When a victim opens the document, the Doc.media.newPlayer method is invoked to initialize a media player object. The exploit triggers premature destruction of this object, leaving a dangling pointer. By utilizing heap spraying techniques, the attacker fills the freed memory space with shellcode. When the application attempts to reuse the freed object pointer, control flow is hijacked to execute the attacker's payload.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
This vulnerability has been actively exploited in the wild (listed in CISA KEV) and carries a high severity rating. Successful exploitation allows complete compromise of the victim's endpoint. In an enterprise environment, this can serve as an initial entry point for lateral movement, leading to sensitive data exfiltration, ransomware deployment, and significant operational disruption.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Use-after-free vulnerability in the Doc.media.newPlayer method in Multimedia.api in Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9.x before 9.3, and 8.x before 8.2 on Windows and Mac OS X, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted PDF file using ZLib compressed streams, as exploited in the wild in December 2009.
