Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9.x before 9.3, 8.x before 8.2, and 7.x before 7.1.4 on Windows and Mac OS X

Impact

Remote attackers can execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted PDF document containing malformed U3D data

Mitigation

Apply the official vendor security patches immediately, or disable 3D/U3D rendering features via registry policies

Affected Products & Version Scope

Adobe Reader and Acrobat versions 9.x before 9.3, 8.x before 8.2, and 7.x before 7.1.4 on Windows and Mac OS X platforms

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Apply the official Adobe security updates (APSB10-02). For enterprise deployments, administrators can silently deploy the patch using the following command:

bash
# Example command for silent deployment of the MSP patch via command line
msiexec.exe /p "AdbeRdrUpd930_all_incr.msp" /qn /norestart

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If patching cannot be implemented immediately, disable 3D content rendering in Adobe Reader to mitigate the attack vector.

powershell
# Disable 3D features in Adobe Reader via Registry to mitigate U3D parsing vulnerabilities
$RegistryPath = 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\9.0\FeatureLockDown'
if (-not (Test-Path $RegistryPath)) { New-Item -Path $RegistryPath -Force }
New-ItemProperty -Path $RegistryPath -Name 'bEnable3D' -Value 0 -PropertyType DWord -Force

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Run the following PowerShell script to audit endpoints and identify vulnerable installations of Adobe Reader or Acrobat.

powershell
# Audit script to detect vulnerable Adobe Reader/Acrobat versions
$Apps = Get-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\*' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
    Where-Object { $_.DisplayName -like '*Adobe Reader*' -or $_.DisplayName -like '*Adobe Acrobat*' }

foreach ($App in $Apps) {
    [version]$Ver = $App.DisplayVersion
    if ($Ver -lt '9.3.0' -and $Ver -ge '9.0.0') {
        Write-Error "Vulnerable Adobe 9.x detected: $($App.DisplayName) (Version: $Ver)"
    } elseif ($Ver -lt '8.2.0' -and $Ver -ge '8.0.0') {
        Write-Error "Vulnerable Adobe 8.x detected: $($App.DisplayName) (Version: $Ver)"
    } elseif ($Ver -lt '7.1.4' -and $Ver -ge '7.0.0') {
        Write-Error "Vulnerable Adobe 7.x detected: $($App.DisplayName) (Version: $Ver)"
    } else {
        Write-Host "Compliant or non-vulnerable version: $($App.DisplayName) (Version: $Ver)" -ForegroundColor Green
    }
}

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability is an out-of-bounds write (CWE-787) within the Universal 3D (U3D) parsing engine of Adobe Reader and Acrobat. The root cause lies in an 'array boundary issue' when processing the 'CLODProgressiveMeshDeclaration' structure in U3D data. Due to insufficient validation of array boundaries and size declarations, the parser fails to restrict memory writes within allocated buffer limits when handling malformed 3D mesh data.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker exploits this vulnerability by embedding a highly structured, malformed U3D object inside a standard PDF document. When a user opens the document, the vulnerable Adobe application attempts to parse the 3D mesh declaration. Because the boundary checks are bypassed, the parser writes data beyond the allocated heap or stack buffer, overwriting critical execution control structures (such as function pointers or SEH handlers). This allows the attacker to hijack the execution flow and run arbitrary shellcode under the context of the logged-in user.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

As a CISA KEV-listed vulnerability with a high EPSS score (0.8322), this flaw has been actively exploited in the wild. Successful exploitation grants the attacker full control over the victim's endpoint. In an enterprise environment, this can serve as an initial access vector, leading to lateral movement, credential theft, and potential ransomware deployment, posing a severe threat to business operations and data confidentiality.
