Apple WebKit Memory Corruption Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2025-31277)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTApple devices running Safari versions prior to 18.6, iOS/iPadOS prior to 18.6, macOS Sequoia prior to 15.6, tvOS prior to 18.6, visionOS prior to 2.6, and watchOS prior to 11.6
Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to memory corruption, potentially allowing remote attackers to execute arbitrary code (RCE) or cause a denial of service (DoS) on the target device
Immediately apply the latest official security updates provided by Apple (Safari 18.6, iOS 18.6, macOS 15.6, etc.)
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Apply Official Security Patches
Update your Apple devices to the latest versions immediately via the built-in Software Update mechanism:
- iOS / iPadOS: Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Update to iOS 18.6 / iPadOS 18.6 or later
- macOS: Go to System Settings > General > Software Update > Update to macOS Sequoia 15.6 or later
- Safari: Update to Safari 18.6 or later via the App Store or System Settings
2. Temporary Mitigations (If patching is delayed)
- Restrict users from clicking untrusted links in emails, SMS, or messaging applications.
- Deploy Secure Web Gateways (SWG) or Web Application Firewalls (WAF) to block outbound traffic to known malicious or suspicious domains.
Block Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
This vulnerability (CVE-2025-31277) is a critical memory corruption flaw residing in Apple's WebKit rendering engine. It is caused by improper memory handling and buffer management (CWE-119, CWE-120) when processing web content. An attacker can exploit this by enticing a user to visit a specially crafted malicious webpage.
Given its inclusion in the CISA KEV catalog and an extremely high EPSS score of 0.94, this vulnerability is actively being exploited in the wild. Successful exploitation allows attackers to bypass sandbox boundaries and execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the active user, making it a high-priority threat for enterprise endpoints.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
The issue was addressed with improved memory handling. This issue is fixed in Safari 18.6, iOS 18.6 and iPadOS 18.6, macOS Sequoia 15.6, tvOS 18.6, visionOS 2.6, watchOS 11.6. Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to memory corruption.
