SimpleHelp Authentication Bypass via Missing OIDC Signature Verification (CVE-2026-48558)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTSimpleHelp versions 5.5.15 and prior, and 6.0 pre-release versions with OIDC authentication configured
Unauthenticated remote attackers can forge identity tokens to bypass authentication, gain full technician sessions, and potentially bypass multi-factor authentication (MFA)
Immediately upgrade SimpleHelp to the patched version or disable OIDC authentication until the patch is applied
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Apply Official Security Patch
Immediately upgrade your SimpleHelp instance to the latest secure release as advised by the vendor.
- Recommended Version: SimpleHelp 5.5.16 or later, or stable 6.0 release
2. Temporary Mitigation (If patching is delayed)
If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, disable OIDC authentication in the SimpleHelp configuration and revert to secure local authentication or alternative identity providers.
# Access the SimpleHelp Administration Console
# Navigate to Authentication Settings -> OIDC Configuration
# Disable or remove the OIDC provider integration3. Incident Response & Monitoring
Review SimpleHelp session logs for anomalous technician logins, especially those originating from unexpected IP addresses or utilizing OIDC flows without corresponding identity provider logs.
Stop Exposing VPN Ports to the Internet — Switch to Zero-Trust Access
Eliminate public-facing VPN concentrators and firewall management ports with identity-first Zero-Trust Network Access.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
This vulnerability (CVE-2026-48558) is a critical authentication bypass in the OpenID Connect (OIDC) flow of SimpleHelp, a remote support and management platform.
Root Cause (CWE-347)
When OIDC authentication is enabled, SimpleHelp fails to verify the cryptographic signature of identity tokens submitted during the login process.
Exploit Mechanics
- Token Forgery: An attacker crafts a malicious JSON Web Token (JWT) containing arbitrary identity claims and administrative privileges.
- Signature Verification Bypass: Because SimpleHelp accepts the token without validating its cryptographic signature, the forged token is processed as trusted and valid.
- Session Hijacking: The attacker successfully establishes a fully authenticated technician session, bypassing multi-factor authentication (MFA) depending on the configuration.
Impact
With a CVSS score of 10.0, this vulnerability is highly critical and has been added to the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog due to active exploitation in the wild. An attacker gaining technician access can execute arbitrary commands and deploy malware across all managed endpoints.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
SimpleHelp versions 5.5.15 and prior and 6.0 pre-release versions contain an authentication bypass vulnerability in the OIDC authentication flow. When OIDC authentication is configured, identity tokens submitted during login are accepted without verifying their cryptographic signature. In a vulnerable configuration, a remote, unauthenticated attacker can submit a forged token containing arbitrary identity claims to obtain a fully authenticated technician session. In some configurations, this may also allow bypass of multi-factor authentication. No user interaction is required.
