LiteSpeed User-End cPanel Plugin Privilege Escalation Vulnerability (CVE-2026-48172) Security Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTLiteSpeed User-End cPanel Plugin versions prior to 2.4.5
Unauthenticated remote attackers can escalate privileges (potentially to root) by exploiting improper handling of Redis features, with active exploitation observed in the wild.
Immediately upgrade the plugin to the recommended minimum version of 2.4.7 or higher and perform IoC scanning using the provided command.
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Apply Security Update
Upgrade the LiteSpeed cPanel plugin immediately. The recommended minimum secure version is 2.4.7.
2. Incident Response & Detection (IoC Verification)
Run the following command in your Bash terminal to check for signs of active exploitation:
grep -rE "cpanel_jsonapi_func=redisAble" /var/cpanel/logs /usr/local/cpanel/logs/ 2>/dev/null- No Output: Your system has likely not been targeted by this specific exploit.
- Output Detected: Examine the identified IP addresses. If they are unauthorized or malicious, block them immediately at the firewall level and conduct a thorough forensic analysis of the system logs to determine the extent of the compromise.
Block Exploits Instantly with Managed Virtual Patching Rules
Can't patch production immediately? Deploy managed WAF rules at the edge to intercept RCE, SQLi, and deserialization payloads before they hit your origin server.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
This vulnerability (CVE-2026-48172) is a critical privilege escalation flaw in the LiteSpeed User-End cPanel Plugin. The root cause lies in the improper handling of the Redis enable/disable features (redisAble), which falls under Incorrect Privilege Assignment (CWE-266).
An attacker can exploit this flaw to escalate privileges from a standard user to root. With a CVSS score of 9.8 (Critical), this vulnerability requires no privileges or user interaction and can be exploited remotely over the network. Active exploitation was detected in the wild in May 2026, leading to its inclusion in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
LiteSpeed User-End cPanel Plugin before 2.4.5 allows privilege escalation (possibly to root), as exploited in the wild in May 2026. Detection is best done via a command line of grep -rE "cpanel_jsonapi_func=redisAble" /var/cpanel/logs /usr/local/cpanel/logs/ 2>/dev/null in Bash. If you get no output, you have not been hit with exploitation of the vulnerability. If there is output, we recommend you examine the IP addresses in the list, determine if they are valid IP addresses, and if not, block them. To determine damage done, examine the system logs for use by the detected IP addresses. The issue is related to mishandling of Redis enable/disable features. The recommended minimum version is 2.4.7.
