Fortinet FortiClientEMS SQL Injection Remote Code Execution Vulnerability Advisory (CVE-2026-21643)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTFortinet FortiClientEMS version 7.4.4
An unauthenticated remote attacker can execute unauthorized code or commands with system privileges by sending crafted HTTP requests.
Immediately apply the official vendor patches and restrict external access to the EMS management ports.
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Apply Official Security Patches
Refer to the Fortinet PSIRT Advisory (FG-IR-25-1142) and immediately upgrade FortiClientEMS to the latest secure release.
2. Temporary Mitigations (If patching cannot be applied immediately)
- Network Access Control (ACL): Restrict access to the FortiClientEMS administration and API ports (e.g., default TCP 8443) from the public internet. Allow access only from trusted administrator IP ranges or via a secure VPN.
- Web Application Firewall (WAF): Deploy and enable WAF rules designed to detect and block SQL injection patterns (e.g.,
',--,UNION,SELECT,xp_cmdshell) in incoming HTTP traffic.
3. Monitor Indicators of Compromise (IoC)
- Inspect FortiClientEMS web server logs and database audit logs for anomalous SQL queries or database error patterns.
- Monitor for signature patterns associated with public exploit scripts:
# Example of monitoring for unauthorized SQL injection attempts in HTTP payloads
# Look for unexpected database command execution or stacked queriesStop Exposing VPN Ports to the Internet — Switch to Zero-Trust Access
Eliminate public-facing VPN concentrators and firewall management ports with identity-first Zero-Trust Network Access.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
This vulnerability (CVE-2026-21643) is a critical SQL Injection (CWE-89) vulnerability in Fortinet FortiClientEMS.
An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this flaw by sending specially crafted HTTP requests to the FortiClientEMS server. Because the application fails to properly neutralize special elements within SQL commands, the injected payload is executed directly by the underlying database engine.
Depending on the database configuration and privileges, this can be leveraged to execute arbitrary operating system commands (Remote Code Execution) via database extension procedures (such as xp_cmdshell in MS SQL). With a CVSS score of 9.8, this vulnerability poses an extreme risk and has been added to the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog due to active exploitation in the wild.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
An improper neutralization of special elements used in an sql command ('sql injection') vulnerability in Fortinet FortiClientEMS 7.4.4 may allow an unauthenticated attacker to execute unauthorized code or commands via specifically crafted HTTP requests.
