Microsoft Excel Invalid Object Reference Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2009-0238) Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTMicrosoft Office Excel 2000 through 2007, Excel Viewer, Office for Mac 2004/2008, and Compatibility Pack.
Opening a specially crafted Excel document can trigger an access attempt on an invalid object, allowing remote attackers to execute arbitrary code.
Apply the official Microsoft security patches immediately and restrict opening untrusted Excel attachments.
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Apply Official Security Patches
Deploy the official security updates provided by Microsoft to resolve this vulnerability.
- Run Windows Update to install the latest cumulative updates and Office security patches.
- For legacy systems, refer to Microsoft Security Advisory 968272 to download and apply the appropriate KB updates.
2. Temporary Mitigations
If patching is not immediately feasible in legacy environments, implement the following controls:
- Restrict Untrusted Files: Do not open unexpected or untrusted Excel attachments received via email or external sources.
- Configure File Block Settings: Use Group Policy Objects (GPO) to block the opening of legacy Excel file formats.
- Email Gateway Filtering: Configure email security gateways to scan and block incoming emails containing suspicious macro-enabled or legacy Excel attachments.
Block Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
This vulnerability (CVE-2009-0238) exists in the way Microsoft Excel parses specific data structures within Excel files. By crafting a malicious Excel document (.xls) and tricking a user into opening it, an attacker can trigger an invalid memory object access attempt.
This leads to memory corruption, enabling the attacker to hijack the execution flow and run arbitrary code under the security context of the logged-in user. This vulnerability was actively exploited in the wild in February 2009 by the Trojan.Mdropper.AC malware family and is cataloged in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) list, posing a persistent threat to legacy environments.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Microsoft Office Excel 2000 SP3, 2002 SP3, 2003 SP3, and 2007 SP1; Excel Viewer 2003 Gold and SP3; Excel Viewer; Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats SP1; and Excel in Microsoft Office 2004 and 2008 for Mac allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Excel document that triggers an access attempt on an invalid object, as exploited in the wild in February 2009 by Trojan.Mdropper.AC.
